The value returned by an i2c driver's remove function is mostly ignored. (Only an error message is printed if the value is non-zero that the error is ignored.)
So change the prototype of the remove function to return no value. This way driver authors are not tempted to assume that passing an error to the upper layer is a good idea. All drivers are adapted accordingly. There is no intended change of behaviour, all callbacks were prepared to return 0 before.

The media bus configuration is specified through a set of flags, some of which being mutually exclusive. This doesn't scale to express more complex configurations. Improve the API by replacing the single flags field in v4l2_mbus_config by a union of v4l2_mbus_config_* structures. The flags themselves are still used in those structures, so they are kept here. Drivers are however updated to use structure fields instead of flags when already possible.

According to v4l2-compliance utility, a video device which supports V4L2_CAP_TIMEPERFRAME via .vidioc_s_parm() operation should also support .vidioc_enum_frameintervals(). If the former is implemented via a call to v4l2_s_parm_cap() which in turn calls a subdevice .s_frame_interval() pad operation, the video device may want to implement the latter by passing frame interval enumeration requests to the subdevice .enum_frame_intervals() video operation. If that operation is not supported by the subdevice and failure is returned by the video device, the compliance test issues a warning.
Implement the missing pad operation. Enumerate frame intervals possible to be set via pixel clock adjustment, as implemented by .s_frame_interval(), but not exceeding a reasonable maximum of 1 second.

In case of set format active processing path the issue can be fixed easily by excluding a call to set active selection from that path. That will effectively limit frame size processing to optimal frame scaling against active crop rectangle without touching it. Users can just call set active selection themselves to obtain desired frame size. However, set format try processing path needs more work.
First of all, the driver should be extended with set try selection support. Lack of it constraints video device drivers to not use subdevice cropping at all while processing user requested active frame size, otherwise their set try format results might differ from active.
Next, set format try processing path should use pad config crop rectangle as a reference, not the active one as it does now. That issue can be resolved easily as soon as set try selection support is added to the driver so pad config crop rectangle can be maintained by users via selection API.
Last, set format try processing path should give the same results as active in respect to active vs. pad config crop rectangle geometry. Both rectangles should be either not touched by set format (that's what we are going to achieve) or modified the same way, otherwise users won't be able to obtain equal results from both paths while iterating through set format and set selection operations in order to obtain desired frame size.
We can't begin with modifying set format pad operation as not to touch crop rectangle since that depends on availability of set try selection for symmetry. Neither can we begin with adding set try selection since that in turn depends on equal handling of active and pad config crop rectangles by set format. We can either implement all required modifications in a single patch, or begin with fixing current set format try processing path to appropriately handle pad config crop rectangle. This patch implements the latter approach as believed to be more readable.
Move crop rectangle adjustments code from a helper (the former implementation of .s_fmt(), now called from set format active processing path) to the body of set format pad operation function where it can be also used for processing try requests for symmetry with active ones. As the helper no longer processes frame geometry, only frame format and half scaling, simplify its API accordingly and update its users.
Moreover, extract code that applies crop rectangle hardware limits (now a part of .set_selection() operation which is called from set format active processing path) to a new helper and call that helper from set format try processing path as well for symmetry with active.

We have 'struct v4l2_subdev_pad_config' which contains configuration for a single pad used for the TRY functionality, and an array of those structs is passed to various v4l2_subdev_pad_ops.
I was working on subdev internal routing between pads, and realized that there's no way to add TRY functionality for routes, which is not pad specific configuration. Adding a separate struct for try-route config wouldn't work either, as e.g. set-fmt needs to know the try-route configuration to propagate the settings.
This patch adds a new struct, 'struct v4l2_subdev_state' (which at the moment only contains the v4l2_subdev_pad_config array) and the new struct is used in most of the places where v4l2_subdev_pad_config was used. All v4l2_subdev_pad_ops functions taking v4l2_subdev_pad_config are changed to instead take v4l2_subdev_state.
The changes to drivers/media/v4l2-core/v4l2-subdev.c and include/media/v4l2-subdev.h were written by hand, and all the driver changes were done with the semantic patch below. The spatch needs to be applied to a select list of directories. I used the following shell commands to apply the spatch:

Use the new get_mbus_config and set_mbus_config pad operations in place of the video operations currently in use.
Compared to other drivers where the same conversion has been performed, ov6650 proved to be a bit more tricky, as the existing g_mbus_config implementation did not report the currently applied configuration but the set of all possible configuration options.
Adapt the driver to support the semantic of the two newly introduced operations: - get_mbus_config reports the current media bus configuration - set_mbus_config applies only changes explicitly requested and updates the provided cfg parameter to report what has actually been applied to the hardware.
Compile-tested only.

A hardcoded 12 MHz master clock frequency has been assumed since conversion of the driver from soc_camera sensor to a standalone V4L2 subdevice by commit 23a52386fabe ("media: ov6650: convert to standalone v4l2 subdevice"). Fix it.
Define a static table of supported master clock rates (fix misnamed symbol while being at it), then use v4l2_clk_get/set_rate() to obtain a clock rate matching one of those supported. On success, apply respective master clock hardware divisor provided by the matching element of the table.

As calculation of pixel clock hardware divisor no longer depends on mbus format specific maximum pixel clock, there is no need to reapply the divisor on format change. Drop related code from ov6650_s_fmt() helper.
Since a master clock hardware divisor, so far applied only together with the pixel clock divisor in a single operation, will no longer be applied from ov6650_s_fmt(), apply it, still using a hardcoded value for now, from ov6650_prog_dflt() helper so hardware is still initialised correctly on device probe.

As appears from an analysis of to_clkrc() helper code after its pclk_limit argument has been dropped, its result no longer depends on another argument - pclk_max. Moreover, assuming that a constant value of FRAME_RATE_MAX is always used as a denominator of the only significant argument left - a struct v4l2_fract, the result in fact depends only on the numerator value of that argument. As a further consequence, it no longer makes sense to recalculate frame intervals by converting them forth and back with a GET_CLKRC_DIV(to_clkrc(tpf)) construct.
Drop use of GET_CLKRC_DIV() on results of to_clkrc() where possible - use the frame interval value directly. Furthermore, replace the to_clkrc() helper function with a simple macro and update its users to always use FRAME_RATE_MAX as frame interval denominator and pass only its numerator as an argument.

That attribute used to be obtained from platform data by a soc_camera host interface and passed to the sensor driver for .s_mbus_fmt() video operation callback, later reused as .set_fmt() pad operation callback, to be able to limit frame rate. The driver stored that value in its private structure for further use from .g/s_parm(), later converted to g/s_frame_interval().
On conversion of the driver from soc_camera sensor to a standalone V4L2 subdevice by commit 23a52386fabe ("media: ov6650: convert to standalone v4l2 subdevice"), that attribute had been replaced by a constant and hardcoded to an arbitrarily chosen pixel clock limit. Drop it. Host interfaces can limit frame rate if needed by calling .s_frame_interval().

Since the driver initial submission, the respective field of the structure has never been initialised on device probe. Moreover, if updated from .s_frame_interval(), a new value is stored before it is applied on hardware. If an error occurs during device update, the stored value may no longer reflect hardware state and consecutive calls to .g_frame_interval() may return incorrect information.
Assuming a failed update of the device means its actual state hasn't changed, update the frame interval field of the device private structure with a new value only after it is successfully applied on hardware so it always reflects actual hardware state to the extent possible. Also, initialise the field with hardware default frame interval on device probe.

Since the driver initial submission, crop rectangle width and height settings are not updated correctly when rectangle offset settings are applied on hardware. If an error occurs while the device is updated, the stored settings my no longer reflect hardware state and consecutive calls to .get_selection() as well as .get/set_fmt() may return incorrect information. That in turn may affect ability of a bridge device to use correct DMA transfer settings if such incorrect informamtion on active frame format returned by .get/set_fmt() is used.
Assuming a failed update of the device means its actual settings haven't changed, update crop rectangle width and height settings stored in the device private structure correctly while the rectangle offset is successfully applied on hardware so the stored values always reflect actual hardware state to the extent possible.
