system/cpus: rename qemu_mutex_lock_iothread() to bql_lock()
The Big QEMU Lock (BQL) has many names and they are confusing. The actual QemuMutex variable is called qemu_global_mutex but it's commonly referred to as the BQL in discussions and some code comments. The locking APIs, however, are called qemu_mutex_lock_iothread() and qemu_mutex_unlock_iothread().
The "iothread" name is historic and comes from when the main thread was split into into KVM vcpu threads and the "iothread" (now called the main loop thread). I have contributed to the confusion myself by introducing a separate --object iothread, a separate concept unrelated to the BQL.
The "iothread" name is no longer appropriate for the BQL. Rename the locking APIs to: - void bql_lock(void) - void bql_unlock(void) - bool bql_locked(void)
There are more APIs with "iothread" in their names. Subsequent patches will rename them. There are also comments and documentation that will be updated in later patches.

hw/s390x/s390-skeys: Don't call register_savevm_live() during instance_init()
Since the instance_init() function immediately tries to set the property to "true", the s390_skeys_set_migration_enabled() tries to register a savevm handler during instance_init(). However, instance_init() functions can be called multiple times, e.g. for introspection of devices. That means multiple instances of devices can be created during runtime (which is fine as long as they all don't get realized, too), so the "Prevent double registration of savevm handler" check in the s390_skeys_set_migration_enabled() function does not work at all as expected (since there could be more than one instance).
Thus we must not call register_savevm_live() from an instance_init() function at all. Move this to the realize() function instead. This way we can also get rid of the property getter and setter functions completely, simplifying the code along the way quite a bit.

hw/s390x/s390-skeys: lazy storage key enablement under TCG
Let's enable storage keys lazily under TCG, just as we do under KVM. Only fairly old Linux versions actually make use of storage keys, so it can be kind of wasteful to allocate quite some memory and track changes and references if nobody cares.
We have to make sure to flush the TLB when enabling storage keys after the VM was already running: otherwise it might happen that we don't catch references or modifications afterwards.
Add proper documentation to all callbacks.
The kvm-unit-tests skey tests keeps on working with this change.

hw/s390x/s390-skeys: check if an address is valid before dumping the key
Let's validate the given address and report a proper error in case it's not. All call paths now properly check the validity of the given GFN. Remove the TODO.
The errors inside the getter and setter should only trigger if something really goes wrong now, for example, with a broken migration stream. Or when we forget to update the storage key allocation with memory hotplug.

hw/s390x/s390-skeys: use memory mapping to detect which storage keys to migrate
Let's use the guest_phys_blocks API to get physical memory regions that are well defined inside our physical address space and migrate the storage keys of these.
This is a preparation for having memory besides initial ram defined in the guest physical address space, for example, via memory devices. We get rid of the ms->ram_size dependency.
Please note that we will usually have very little (--> 1) physical ranges. With virtio-mem might have significantly more ranges in the future. If that turns out to be a problem (e.g., total memory footprint of the list), we could look into a memory mapping API that avoids creation of a list and instead triggers a callback for each range.

qom: Drop parameter @errp of object_property_add() & friends
The only way object_property_add() can fail is when a property with the same name already exists. Since our property names are all hardcoded, failure is a programming error, and the appropriate way to handle it is passing &error_abort.
Same for its variants, except for object_property_add_child(), which additionally fails when the child already has a parent. Parentage is also under program control, so this is a programming error, too.
We have a bit over 500 callers. Almost half of them pass &error_abort, slightly fewer ignore errors, one test case handles errors, and the remaining few callers pass them to their own callers.
The previous few commits demonstrated once again that ignoring programming errors is a bad idea.
Of the few ones that pass on errors, several violate the Error API. The Error ** argument must be NULL, &error_abort, &error_fatal, or a pointer to a variable containing NULL. Passing an argument of the latter kind twice without clearing it in between is wrong: if the first call sets an error, it no longer points to NULL for the second call. ich9_pm_add_properties(), sparc32_ledma_realize(), sparc32_dma_realize(), xilinx_axidma_realize(), xilinx_enet_realize() are wrong that way.
When the one appropriate choice of argument is &error_abort, letting users pick the argument is a bad idea.
Drop parameter @errp and assert the preconditions instead.
There's one exception to "duplicate property name is a programming error": the way object_property_add() implements the magic (and undocumented) "automatic arrayification". Don't drop @errp there. Instead, rename object_property_add() to object_property_try_add(), and add the obvious wrapper object_property_add().

vl/s390x: fixup ram sizes for compat machines
Older QEMU versions did fixup the ram size to match what can be reported via sclp. We need to mimic this behaviour for machine types 4.2 and older to not fail on inbound migration for memory sizes that do not fit. Old machines with proper aligned memory sizes are not affected.
Alignment table: VM size (<=) | Alignment -------------------------- 1020M | 1M 2040M | 2M 4080M | 4M 8160M | 8M 16320M | 16M 32640M | 32M 65280M | 64M 130560M | 128M 261120M | 256M 522240M | 512M 1044480M | 1G 2088960M | 2G 4177920M | 4G 8355840M | 8G
Suggested action is to replace unaligned -m value with a suitable aligned one or if a change to a newer machine type is possible, use a machine version >= 5.0.
A future version might remove the compatibility handling.
For machine types >= 5.0 we can simply use an increment size of 1M and use the full range of increment number which allows for all possible memory sizes. The old limitation of having a maximum of 1020 increments was added for standby memory, which we no longer support. With that we can now support even weird memory sizes like 10001234 MB.
As we no longer fixup maxram_size as well, make other users use ram_size instead. Keep using maxram_size when setting the maximum ram size in KVM, as that will come in handy in the future when supporting memory hotplug (in contrast, storage keys and storage attributes for hotplugged memory will have to be migrated per RAM block in the future).

Merge remote-tracking branch 'remotes/elmarco/tags/dbus-vmstate7-pull-request' into staging
Add dbus-vmstate
Hi,
With external processes or helpers participating to the VM support, it becomes necessary to handle their migration. Various options exist to transfer their state: 1) as the VM memory, RAM or devices (we could say that's how vhost-user devices can be handled today, they are expected to restore from ring state) 2) other "vmstate" (as with TPM emulator state blobs) 3) left to be handled by management layer
1) is not practical, since an external processes may legitimatelly need arbitrary state date to back a device or a service, or may not even have an associated device.
2) needs ad-hoc code for each helper, but is simple and working
3) is complicated for management layer, QEMU has the migration timing
The proposed "dbus-vmstate" object will connect to a given D-Bus address, and save/load from org.qemu.VMState1 owners on migration.
Thus helpers can easily have their state migrated with QEMU, without implementing ad-hoc support (such as done for TPM emulation)
D-Bus is ubiquitous on Linux (it is systemd IPC), and can be made to work on various other OSes. There are several implementations and good bindings for various languages. (the tests/dbus-vmstate-test.c is a good example of how simple the implementation of services can be, even in C)
dbus-vmstate is put into use by the libvirt series "[PATCH 00/23] Use a slirp helper process".
