Some tests written in bash source other files in a parent directory. For
example, drivers/net/bonding/dev_addr_lists.sh sources
net/forwarding/lib.sh. If a subset of tests is exported and run outside the
source tree (for example by using `make -C tools/testing/selftests gen_tar
TARGETS="drivers/net/bonding"`), these other files must be made available
as well.

Commit ae108c48b5d2 ("selftests: net: Fix cross-tree inclusion of scripts")
addressed this problem by symlinking and copying the sourced files but this
only works for direct dependencies. Commit 25ae948b4478 ("selftests/net:
add lib.sh") changed net/forwarding/lib.sh to source net/lib.sh. As a
result, that latter file must be included as well when the former is
exported. This was not handled and was reverted in commit 2114e83381d3
("selftests: forwarding: Avoid failures to source net/lib.sh"). In order to
allow reinstating the inclusion of net/lib.sh from net/forwarding/lib.sh,
add a mechanism to list dependent files in a new Makefile variable and
export them. This allows sourcing those files using the same expression
whether tests are run in-tree or exported.

Dependencies are not resolved recursively so transitive dependencies must
be listed in TEST_INCLUDES. For example, if net/forwarding/lib.sh sources
net/lib.sh; the Makefile related to a test that sources
net/forwarding/lib.sh from a parent directory must list:

This reverts commit 9fc96c7c19df ("selftests: error out if kernel header
files are not yet built").

It turns out that requiring the kernel headers to be built as a
prerequisite to building selftests, does not work in many cases. For
example, Peter Zijlstra writes:

"My biggest beef with the whole thing is that I simply do not want to use
'make headers', it doesn't work for me.

I have a ton of output directories and I don't care to build tools into
the output dirs, in fact some of them flat out refuse to work that way
(bpf comes to mind)." [1]

Therefore, stop erroring out on the selftests build. Additional patches
will be required in order to change over to not requiring the kernel
headers.

"This adds the fchmodat2() system call. It is a revised version of the
fchmodat() system call, adding a missing flag argument. Support for
both AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW and AT_EMPTY_PATH are included.

Adding this system call revision has been a longstanding request but
so far has always fallen through the cracks. While the kernel
implementation of fchmodat() does not have a flag argument the libc
provided POSIX-compliant fchmodat(3) version does. Both glibc and musl
have to implement a workaround in order to support AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW
(see [1] and [2]).

The workaround is brittle because it relies not just on O_PATH and
O_NOFOLLOW semantics and procfs magic links but also on our rather
inconsistent symlink semantics.

This gives userspace a proper fchmodat2() system call that libcs can
use to properly implement fchmodat(3) and allows them to get rid of
their hacks. In this case it will immediately benefit them as the
current workaround is already defunct because of aformentioned
inconsistencies.

In addition to AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW, give userspace the ability to use
AT_EMPTY_PATH with fchmodat2(). This is already possible with
fchownat() so there's no reason to not also support it for
fchmodat2().

The implementation is simple and comes with selftests. Implementation
of the system call and wiring up the system call are done as separate
patches even though they could arguably be one patch. But in case
there are merge conflicts from other system call additions it can be
beneficial to have separate patches"

Oracle DB is trying to solve a performance overhead problem it has been
facing for the past 10 years and using this patch series, we can fix this
issue.

Oracle DB runs on a large scale with 100000s of short lived processes,
starting up and exiting quickly. A process monitoring DB daemon which
tracks and cleans up after processes that have died without a proper exit
needs notifications only when a process died with a non-zero exit code
(which should be rare).

Due to the pmon architecture, which is distributed, each process is
independent and has minimal interaction with pmon. Hence fd based
solutions to track a process's spawning and exit cannot be used. Pmon
needs to detect the abnormal death of a process so it can cleanup after.
Currently it resorts to checking /proc every few seconds. Other methods
we tried like using system call to reduce the above overhead were not
accepted upstream.

With this change, we add event based filtering to proc connector module
so that DB can only listen to the events it is interested in. A new
event type PROC_EVENT_NONZERO_EXIT is added, which is only sent by kernel
to a listening application when any process exiting has a non-zero exit
status.

This change will give Oracle DB substantial performance savings - it takes
50ms to scan about 8K PIDs in /proc, about 500ms for 100K PIDs. DB does
this check every 3 secs, so over an hour we save 10secs for 100K PIDs.

With this, a client can register to listen for only exit or fork or a mix or
all of the events. This greatly enhances performance - currently, we
need to listen to all events, and there are 9 different types of events.
For eg. handling 3 types of events - 8K-forks + 8K-exits + 8K-execs takes
200ms, whereas handling 2 types - 8K-forks + 8K-exits takes about 150ms,
and handling just one type - 8K exits takes about 70ms.

Measuring the time using pidfds for monitoring 8K process exits took 4
times longer - 200ms, as compared to 70ms using only exit notifications
of proc connector. Hence, we cannot use pidfd for our use case.

This kind of a new event could also be useful to other applications like
Google's lmkd daemon, which needs a killed process's exit notification.

This patch series is organized as follows -

Patch 3 : Fixes some bugs in proc connector, details in the patch.
Patch 4 : Adds event based filtering for performance enhancements.
Patch 5 : Allow non-root users access to proc connector events.
Patch 6 : Selftest code for proc connector.
