perf tests shell: Fixed shellcheck warnings
Fixed the shellcheck warnings in buildid.sh, record+probe_libc_inet_pton.sh and record+script_probe_vfs_getname.sh perf shell scripts:
1. Prefer [ p ] && [ q ] as [ p -a q ] is not well defined. 2. Prefer [ p ] || [ q ] as [ p -o q ] is not well defined. 3. Used * argument to avoid the argument mixes string and array 4. Resolved issue for variable refernce, where the variable is being used before it has been initialized. 5. Resolved word splitting issue (syntax error). 6. The "err" variable has been removed from buildid.sh since it is not used anywhere in the code.

perf tests shell: Fix check for libtracevent support
Test “Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames” fails in environment with missing libtraceevent support as below:
82: Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames : --- start --- test child forked, pid 304726 Recording open file: event syntax error: 'probe:vfs_getname*' \___ unsupported tracepoint
libtraceevent is necessary for tracepoint support Run 'perf list' for a list of valid events
Usage: perf record [<options>] [<command>] or: perf record [<options>] -- <command> [<options>]
-e, --event <event> event selector. use 'perf list' to list available events test child finished with -1 ---- end ---- Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames: FAILED!
The environment has debuginfo but is missing the libtraceevent devel.
Hence perf is compiled without libtraceevent support. The test tries to add probe “probe:vfs_getname” and then uses it with “perf record”. This fails at function “parse_events_add_tracepoint" due to missing libtraceevent.
Similarly "probe libc's inet_pton & backtrace it with ping" test slso fails with same reason.
Add a function in 'perf test shell' library to check if perf record with —dry-run reports any error on missing support for libtraceevent. Update both the tests to use this new function “skip_no_probe_record_support” before proceeding With using probe point via perf builtin record.
With the change,
82: Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames : --- start --- test child forked, pid 305014 Recording open file: libtraceevent is necessary for tracepoint support test child finished with -2 ---- end ---- Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames: Skip
81: probe libc's inet_pton & backtrace it with ping : --- start --- test child forked, pid 305036 libtraceevent is necessary for tracepoint support test child finished with -2 ---- end ---- probe libc's inet_pton & backtrace it with ping: Skip

fix this up by moving the related file to use "grep -E" instead.
sed -i "s/egrep/grep -E/g" `grep egrep -rwl tools/perf`
Here are the steps to install the latest grep:

perf test: Allow multiple probes in record+script_probe_vfs_getname.sh
Sometimes when adding a kprobe by perf, it results in multiple probe points, such as the following:
# ./perf probe -l probe:vfs_getname (on getname_flags:73@fs/namei.c with pathname) probe:vfs_getname_1 (on getname_flags:73@fs/namei.c with pathname) probe:vfs_getname_2 (on getname_flags:73@fs/namei.c with pathname) # cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events p:probe/vfs_getname _text+5501804 pathname=+0(+0(%gpr31)):string p:probe/vfs_getname_1 _text+5505388 pathname=+0(+0(%gpr31)):string p:probe/vfs_getname_2 _text+5508396 pathname=+0(+0(%gpr31)):string
In this test, we need to record all of them and expect any of them in the perf-script output, since it's not clear which one will be used for the desired syscall:
# perf stat -e probe:vfs_getname\* -- touch /tmp/nic
Performance counter stats for 'touch /tmp/nic':
31 probe:vfs_getname_2 0 probe:vfs_getname_1 1 probe:vfs_getname 0.001421826 seconds time elapsed
0.001506000 seconds user 0.000000000 seconds sys
If the test relies only on probe:vfs_getname, it might easily miss the relevant data.

Further notes from Hendrik:
It might be worth to note that adding the shebang is necessary to spot them as scripts.
Using /bin/sh looks fine to. Just briefly checked whether the scripts contains some bash-specifics, which is not the case.

perf test shell: Check if 'perf probe' is available, skip tests if not
Add a library function that checks if 'perf probe' is built into the tool being tested, skipping tests that need it.
Testing it on a system after removing the library needed to build 'probe' as a perf subcommand:
# perf test ping vfs_getname 59: Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames : Skip 60: probe libc's inet_pton & backtrace it with ping : Skip 61: Check open filename arg using perf trace + vfs_getname: Skip 62: Add vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames : Skip # perf probe perf: 'probe' is not a perf-command. Now reinstalling elfutils-libelf-devel on this Fedora 26 system to rebuild perf and then retest this:

perf test shell: Add test using probe:vfs_getname and verifying results
This test uses the 'perf test shell' library to add probe:vfs_getname to the system then use it with 'perf record' using 'touch' to write to a temp file, then checks that that was captured by the vfs_getname probe in the generated perf.data file, with the temp file name as the pathname argument.
Using it:
# perf test "Use vfs_getname" 60: Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames: Ok # perf test -v "Use vfs_getname" 60: Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames: --- start --- test child forked, pid 16414 Added new event: probe:vfs_getname (on getname_flags:72 with pathname=result->name:string)
You can now use it in all perf tools, such as:
perf record -e probe:vfs_getname -aR sleep 1

perf test: Allow multiple probes in record+script_probe_vfs_getname.sh Sometimes when adding a kprobe by perf, it results in multiple probe points, such as the following: # ./perf probe -l probe:vfs_getname (on getname_flags:73@fs/namei.c with pathname) probe:vfs_getname_1 (on getname_flags:73@fs/namei.c with pathname) probe:vfs_getname_2 (on getname_flags:73@fs/namei.c with pathname) # cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events p:probe/vfs_getname _text+5501804 pathname=+0(+0(%gpr31)):string p:probe/vfs_getname_1 _text+5505388 pathname=+0(+0(%gpr31)):string p:probe/vfs_getname_2 _text+5508396 pathname=+0(+0(%gpr31)):string In this test, we need to record all of them and expect any of them in the perf-script output, since it's not clear which one will be used for the desired syscall: # perf stat -e probe:vfs_getname\* -- touch /tmp/nic Performance counter stats for 'touch /tmp/nic': 31 probe:vfs_getname_2 0 probe:vfs_getname_1 1 probe:vfs_getname 0.001421826 seconds time elapsed 0.001506000 seconds user 0.000000000 seconds sys If the test relies only on probe:vfs_getname, it might easily miss the relevant data. perf tests: Use shebangs in the shell scripts Since the first line was used as a test identification, it needs to be skipped by shell_test__description() function now. Further notes from Hendrik: It might be worth to note that adding the shebang is necessary to spot them as scripts. Using /bin/sh looks fine to. Just briefly checked whether the scripts contains some bash-specifics, which is not the case. perf test shell: Check if 'perf probe' is available, skip tests if not Add a library function that checks if 'perf probe' is built into the tool being tested, skipping tests that need it.
