In case of error, functions dasd_kmalloc_request and idal_buffer_alloc return an ERR pointer, but never return the NULL pointer. So after a call to one of these functions, a NULL test should be replaced by an IS_ERR test.

[S390] dasd: add hyper PAV support to DASD device driver, part 1
Parallel access volumes (PAV) is a storage server feature, that allows to start multiple channel programs on the same DASD in parallel. It defines alias devices which can be used as alternative paths to the same disk. With the old base PAV support we only needed rudimentary functionality in the DASD device driver. As the mapping between base and alias devices was static, we just had to export an identifier (uid) and could leave the combining of devices to external layers like a device mapper multipath. Now hyper PAV removes the requirement to dedicate alias devices to specific base devices. Instead each alias devices can be combined with multiple base device on a per request basis. This requires full support by the DASD device driver as now each channel program itself has to identify the target base device. The changes to the dasd device driver and the ECKD discipline are: - Separate subchannel device representation (dasd_device) from block device representation (dasd_block). Only base devices are block devices. - Gather information about base and alias devices and possible combinations. - For each request decide which dasd_device should be used (base or alias) and build specific channel program. - Support summary unit checks, which allow the storage server to upgrade / downgrade between base and hyper PAV at runtime (support is mandatory).

For extended error reporting we sometimes have to start an Sense Subsystem Status request (SNSS). When this request needs to be recovered for some reason, the recovery request will fail with 'command reject'. Our usual recovery procedure will retry the failed request by creating a new request and chaining the failed request from that one. SNSS requests, though, must not be chained from anything, so the recovery request will fail permanently. Use the default recovery for SNSS request, which will just restart the original request without further ado.

The initialization of the dasd_eer code is one of the last steps of the dasd driver initialization. When initialization fails in one of the earlier steps, the dasd_exit function is called to clean up what has been done so far. So the dasd_eer_exit function may be called, although the dasd_eer_init function wasn't called before and dasd_eer_exit tries to unregister a misc device that wasn't registered, which results in a BUG.
Make sure that dasd_eer_exit can be called without initialization. Use a dynamically allocated struct miscdevice instead of a static one, so we only try to unregister the device if it exists and was actually registered.

When a configured warning watermark is reached, the physical space is completeley exhausted, or the capacity constraints have been relieved, a message is received. A log entry for the sysadmin to react to is generated in any case. In case the physical space is completely exhausted, sense data that reads "no space left on device" is received. In this case, currently running I/O will be blocked until space has either been released or added to the extent pool, and a relieve message was received via an attention interrupt. treewide: kmalloc() -> kmalloc_array() The kmalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kmalloc_array(). This patch replaces cases of: kmalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kmalloc_array(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kmalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kmalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kmalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. The tools/ directory was manually excluded, since it has its own implementation of kmalloc().
